SELINSGROVE, Pa. Pat Cannon, of Etters, held off a last-lap, last-turn pass attempt by Blane Heimbach, of Selinsgrove, to win his second Paul Stine Chevrolet National Open for 358 sprint cars Saturday night at Selinsgrove Speedway.
The $5,000 victory marked Cannon’s sixth of the season at the track and the 14th overall this year behind the wheel of the Highlands Tire Service No. 3. Cannon, who clinched this year’s track championship, set a new one-lap track of 17.904 seconds in qualifying.
AJ Hoffman, of Richfield, won his seventh pro stock race of the season in the 15-lap feature. Hoffman ended the year as the division’s leading feature winner.

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Sunday night at Selinsgrove Speedway belonged to Millerstown’s Todd Shaffer, who set fast time with a lap of 16.543 seconds and then dominated the 30-lap main event for his victory in the 26th Annual National Open for 410 sprint cars.
The win, worth $7,500, was Shaffer’s fifth of the season in central Pennsylvania and the 29th of his career at Selinsgrove. It marked his fourth victory in the track’s National Open, having won the event previously in 1993, 1994, and 2001.
AJ Hoffman, of Richfield, won his sixth race of the season in the 15-lap pro stock feature.
Selinsgrove Speedway will present the final race of the 2008 season at 7 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 20, with the running of the 8th Annual Paul Stine Chevrolet National Open for 358 sprint cars. The 30-lap main event will pay $5,000 to win. The pro stock division will also compete in a 15-lap feature paying $500 to win.
Second-place starter Brian Leppo powered into the lead at the start of the sprint car main event. Leppo was chased by fourth-place starter Todd Shaffer for the first two circuits. The event’s first caution flag unfurled on lap two when Blane Heimbach, who started sixth, fell off the pace while racing in the third position.
On the lap three restart, Shaffer made the winning pass by Leppo using the outside lane in turn two. By lap seven, third-place starter Doug Esh stormed into second and set his sites on Shaffer. Approaching the midway point of the event, Shaffer was leading Esh, seventh-place starter Sean Michael, fifth-place starter Fred Rahmer, and eighth-place starter Mike Erdley.
After a spirited battle with Rahmer for third, Erdley stopped his sprinter in turn two with front end problems on lap 15. A lap later, Michael made the same stop in turn two with mechanical troubles.
The second half of the race saw Shaffer pull away from the field on each restart. On the 24th circuit, Esh dropped out of the race while racing second, handing the runner up position to Rahmer. At the checkered flag, Shaffer was victorious by 5.88 seconds over Rahmer, 10th-place starter Mark Smith, 12th-place starter Greg Hodnett, and 16th-place starter Chad Layton.
Polesitter AJ Hoffman led flag-to-flag for his win in the pro stock feature. Hoffman was chased by third-place starter Tim Krape for the first three laps until Krape was forced to pit with a flat tire. Fifth-place starter Chad Davis inherited second and on several restarts put in a bid for the lead to no avail.
Krape, who was able to rejoin the race, steadily worked his way back into the top five. On a last-lap restart, Krape passed Davis for second and attempted to reel in Hoffman. At the finish, Hoffman was victorious by a mere .64 of a second over Krape, Davis, Peanut Heintzelman, and Scott Landis.

SELINSGROVE, Pa. –Selinsgrove Speedway officials announced today that Bobby Croop, of Nescopeck, has been credited with the June 28 late model win following a review of the events leading up to the race night decision to strip the win away from Croop due to a restarting position error following a lap one altercation involving several cars.
Prior to the race’s restart, Croop, along with Mike Bingaman, of Selinsgrove, were not identified as being involved in the crash when the speedway’s two-way radio communications between officials in the scoring tower and the second turn, where the incident occurred, failed.
Track officials inadvertently placed Croop and Bingaman in their original starting positions when they should have been instructed to restart the race at the rear of the starting lineup. When speedway officials became aware of the error, a post-race decision was made to award the win to Jeff Rine, of Danville. That decision has been reversed, and Rine will be credited with finishing in the second position.
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Len Krautheim, of Middleburg, held off leading feature winner and current point leader Pat Canoon, of Etters, for his first career 358 sprint car win in Saturday night’s 25-lap feature at Selinsgrove Speedway. Krautheim, who owns 11 career victories at the track in 410 sprint car competition and a 1992 championship, was driving his trademark orange No. 3K for the $1,500 victory.
The late model race was called at the halfway point after a deluge suddenly fell upon the speedway and caused a multi-car crash in turn one. AJ Hoffman, of Richfield, won his first race of the season in the 15-lap pro stock feature and became the division’s seventh different winner in 2008. The roadrunner main event was rained out and will be rescheduled for a later date.

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Former two-time Cindy Rowe Auto Glass 358 sprint car track champion Blane Heimbach, of Selinsgrove, returned to winning form with a convincing victory in Saturday night’s 25-lap main event at Selinsgrove Speedway.
Heimbach, who was sidelined last August with a broken leg injury suffered in a sprint car racing accident at Williams Grove Speedway, stormed to the win in Saturday’s race following a lap five pass by Selinsgrove’s Kyle Bachman. He finished third in the track’s March 29 358 opener.
Steve Campbell, of Riverside, inherited the lead from Sunbury’s Tony Adams on lap 17 and drove to his first victory at Selinsgrove in about ten years in the 25-lap late model season opener. Chad Davis, of Muir, won his first career pro stock race in the division’s 15-lap main event, while Keith Bissinger, of Orangeville, won his second straight 12-lap roadrunner feature.

SELINSGROVE, PA – Rick “The Quaker Shaker” Laubach of Quakertown, who had to restart the Icebreaker 50 modified race at the rear of the field following a lap three flat tire, made an impressive charge to the front of the pack to win Saturday’s season opening event for the Race of Champions Dart Dirt Modifieds at Selinsgrove Speedway.
Laubach, who originally started the event in the eighth position, collected $6,900 in money and contingency awards for the victory in the speedway’s first modified race since 1982. Laubach bested an impressive field of 43 modified entries in the $20,000-plus event.
Fourth-place starter Billy Pauch of Frenchtown, NJ, took the lead at the start of the main event and appeared to have the dominant race car until a reported broken axle on the 35th circuit forced him to withdraw from the race. Laubach inherited the lead for the lap 36 restart and maintained the front spot for the duration of the event, stretching his lead on each subsequent restart.
Meanwhile, an intense battle unfolded for the runner up spot between 10th-place starter Steve Paine and original third-place starter Pat Ward, who also had to restart the race following a lap three altercation. With three laps remaining, however, Paine’s car broke on the frontstretch and allowed Ward to rebound for second.
Seventh-place starter Jeff Rudalavage, 20th-place starter David VanHorn, and 26th-place starter Mike Colsten completed the top five in the main event. The top ten included Billy Decker, Butch Tittle, Billy VanPelt, Michael Storms, and Paine.
Polesitter Jeff Strunk withdrew from the race on lap five with a reported blown motor while racing in the third position. The first 12 laps of the race were a battle royale between Pauch and second-place starter Duane Howard of Oley.
Howard’s car broke and spun in turns three and four on the 12th circuit, relinquishing the runner up position to Paine until the 19th lap, when Laubach powered into second and eventually inherited the lead from Pauch on lap 36.
